Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta questions David Luiz’s dismissal with defender AND Bernd Leno sent off as nine-man Gunners self-destruct at Wolves

Mikel Arteta questioned referee Craig Pawson’s decision to send off David Luiz after Arsenal were reduced to nine men in their 2-1 defeat at Wolves.

The midfielder’s brilliant 30-yard drive sealed victory for the hosts, who cashed in on two red cards from the Gunners.

The visitors had total control after Nicolas Pepe’s opener, with Bukayo Saka shooting against a post and also seeing a goal ruled out by VAR.

But the game turned in first-half stoppage time when Ruben Neves equalised from the spot after David Luiz was sent off for tripping Willian Jose.

And Arteta couldn’t hide his anger with the decision to send off Luiz in the first half.

“I am extremely proud of how the team played because I think they were extraordinary,” said the Gunners boss after the game.

“In the first half, we should have been three or four-nil up and we end up 1-1 with a man down.

“We talk about the decision; I’ve been looking at it in different angles and ten different times and I cannot tell you with which part David touches the opponent.”

“I cannot see any contact and it means that the VAR has different angles and that they’ve seen something, but I’m standing here now and I will really like to see where the contact is.”

Asked if we Arsenal should have won the game in the first-half, Arteta added: “That’s clear.

“When you have the opportunity that we had we had to but we didn’t and then we put ourselves in trouble with the first red card.

“After the second the game was impossible to win.”
