Billy Gilmour is set to stay with Chelsea despite Southampton holding talks over signing the young midfielder on loan.
Gilmour had been expected to depart Stamford Bridge following Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as manager, having been left out both of the Blues boss’ matchday squads so far.
Early reports on transfer deadline day claimed Gilmour had told Chelsea bosses he wanted to leave, and Saints opened talks over taking him to the south coast.
Southampton are on the hunt for midfield reinforcements today and 19-year-old Gilmour has already proven his quality in the Premier League.
He’s made eight appearances in England’s top-flight and also played in the Champions League, while his breakthrough campaign last term saw him put in man of the match displays against Liverpool and Everton.
But it appears Saints will not be able to sign their deadline day target as Gilmour is instead set to remain in west London and attempt to break into Tuchel’s preferred line-up.
Meanwhile, Southampton have also made a late move for Bournemouth’s wantaway forward Josh King.
As well as eyeing midfield reinforcements, Saints want a new striker and King has emerged as a deadline day target for Ralph Hasenhuttl.
talkSPORT understands Shane Long could head in the opposite direction with the two south coast clubs in talks over a swap deal.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the Arsenal midfielder, is also wanted by Saints but they face competition from Leicester, West Brom and Newcastle for his signature.
