Brighton missed two penalties and had a goal bizarrely disallowed as West Brom somehow managed to beat them 1-0 on Saturday.
Kyle Bartley’s 11th-minute header from a Conor Gallagher corner was enough to move the Baggies to within eight points of 17th-placed Newcastle.
In an action-packed first-half, Brighton wasted the chance to equalise from the penalty spot after VAR penalised Okay Yokuslu for handball.
However, Pascal Gross directed his effort on to the crossbar in the 19th minute.
And it got worse for Brighton when Lewis Dunk thought he had equalised when his quick free-kick caught out West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the 29th minute.
Despite blowing his whistle for Dunk to take the free-kick, referee Lee Mason disallowed the goal, which led to protests from Brighton players.
In a manic five minutes, Mason then allowed the goal to stand, only for VAR to rule it out due to the official blowing his whistle a second time before the ball had crossed the line.
The free-kick was eventually retaken by Dunk, whose effort was comfortably saved by Dunk.
Explaining the decision to rule out Dunk’s goal, a Premier League spokesman told talkSPORT: “The referee blows the whistle, sees the keeper isn’t ready, quickly blows it again and because the ball hadn’t crossed the line when he blew that second whistle, VAR can intervene.
“He tells the referee that it hadn’t gone in, and so they restarted with the free-kick being retaken.”
Aaron Connolly and Neal Maupay were then thwarted by Johnstone, before Ainsley Maitland-Niles was denied by Robert Sanchez in a back-and-forth end to the opening 45 minutes.
Brighton dominated the second-half and must have been wondering how they had not drawn level when Connolly blasted over from close-range after Johnstone saved from Maupay.
The Seagulls had another chance to score when Conor Townsend fouled Gross in the box.
Gross passed up the responsibility as substitute Danny Welbeck stepped up to take the penalty, but agonisingly hit the post.
Johnstone was called into action once more when he denied Joel Veltman with a smart save as West Brom somehow held on for the three points.
