Eddie Howe and Wayne Rooney tipped to replace Neil Lennon as next permanent Celtic manager but neither are bookies favourites for the job

This season has been nothing short of a disaster for Celtic and it seemed to be only a matter of time before something was going to give.

That indeed has happened with the club confirming Neil Lennon has resigned from his post as Hoops manager.

Things haven’t been going well on and off the pitch with Celtic faltering in both the Champions League and Europa League early doors.

Their bid to win a tenth straight Scottish Premiership title is almost over as they trail fierce rivals Rangers by 18 points.

Steven Gerrard’s side need just seven more points to become champions and winning it at Celtic Park on March 21 is a real possibility now.

And off it they landed themselves in a war of words with Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon after deciding to go on a warm weather training trip to Dubai as the UK begun the battle against the new coronavirus variant back in January.

The trip ended up being a disaster as Christopher Jullien tested positive for COVID, causing a number of first-team players as well as manager Neil Lennon to miss their first two matches back in Scotland – both of which finished as draws.

It only added to calls for Lennon to go with his former Hoops teammate John Hartson even claiming that was the best course of action.

Current assistant manager, John Kennedy, will take interim charge of the team following Lennon’s departure. But the club will be on the lookout for a permanent successor.

A number of interesting names have been tipped for the Celtic job, including Roberto Martinez, Eddie Howe, Rafael Benitez and Frank Lampard.

Betfair reveal Martinez is third favourite for the post at 4/1, Howe is fourth at 5/1, while former Chelsea managers Benitez and Lampard are joint-fifth at 7/1.

Also in the running is Mark Hughes at 14/1, while his former Manchester United teammate and ex-Celtic player is 16/1 to get the job.

Wayne Rooney is also a 25/1 outsider despite being appointed permanent Derby boss only last month.

The favourite for the gig is Kennedy though at 7/4, while Scotland manager Steve Clarke is second favourite at 4/1.
