England squad for Euro 2020: Chelsea ace Mason Mount tipped to miss out on tournament with Gareth Southgate backed to select Phil Foden, James Maddison and Jack Grealish

Charlie Austin has admitted he would leave Mason Mount out of the England squad for this summer’s European Championship to accommodate midfield rivals Phil Foden, James Maddison and Jack Grealish.

The West Brom forward, currently on loan at QPR, was asked by talkSPORT Breakfast host Laura Woods which three of the aforementioned four he’d select if he was England manager – and opted to leave out the in-form Chelsea midfielder.

“That’s a tough question… I saw James Maddison play against Fulham last week and he was the best person on the pitch by a country mile,” the 31-year-old said.

“For 45 minutes he ran them ragged with two assists – I thought he was first class.

“I think I’m trying to get three of the four in: Maddison, Grealish and Foden. I’m leaving Mount out.”

Clearly taken aback by Mount’s omission, Laura asked: “Why are you leaving Mount out?”

Austin responded: “You realise how important Maddison is for Leicester, how important Grealish is for Aston Villa.

“It’s a tough call, and I think there’s going to be situation – not with the No.10s – I think you’ve almost got to sacrifice a position of a No.9.

“I think we’re going to take three No.9s to create space for a No.10, so what do you class [Marcus] Rashford as? I don’t think you’re going to take him as a No.9, you’re going to take him as a winger.

“You’re going to take [Harry] Kane obviously, [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin too – so that leaves one space. I think I’m taking Danny Ings over the others, so it creates another space for the No.10, but I’m going for Grealish, Foden and Maddison.

“I think to help England go forward we do have to pick the form players. The best players have to play.

“We’re going to play with a No.9 and Kane can almost drop deep as well, but I don’t think we’re going to need four centre-forwards.”
