Leon Osman believes Robin Olsen should retain the No.1 spot for Everton even if Jordan Pickford recovers from injury.
The England goalkeeper has played 17 out of a possible 19 Premier League games under Carlo Ancelotti this season as the first choice.
However, Pickford was ruled out of Wednesday’s game against Leeds United with a rib injury and is a doubt for the clash with Manchester United on Saturday evening.
The game, which will be live on talkSPORT as part of our GameDay coverage, will force Ancelotti into a difficult decision about who starts between the sticks after the 2-1 win at Elland Road.
Summer signing Olsen played a huge part in the Toffees picking up all three points in Yorkshire thanks to a number of great saves, but Osman believes it will be harsh for the Sweden international to lose his place to Pickford.
“It’s a difficult one because Jordan Pickford’s qualities are there,” Osman told Jim White.
“Yes he has made some mistakes of late, but I’m always one that if you’re playing well – especially in a position like goalkeeper – then you keep the shirt.
“There is no doubt Olsen made some outstanding saves against Leeds United in the week.
“He came under some real pressure at times and he was really calm and assured and made the saves.
“So I’m always of the ilk that if you’re playing well in a position, you should retain it.”
