Joel Matip ruled out for remainder of season with ankle injury as Liverpool confirm signings of TWO centre-backs on transfer deadline day

Joel Matip has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury as Liverpool completed the signings of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak on deadline day.

The club confirmed late on Monday that Matip had sustained ankle ligament damage in a challenge with Son Heung-min during the first half of the 3-1 win over Tottenham last weekend.

Boss Jurgen Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season.

“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.

“It was really unlucky because it was a brilliant challenge he made actually, he saved our life in that moment in the Tottenham game when he won the challenge against Son.

“But he injured his ankle and played the game on and now is out for the season, so you can imagine how much he tried to stay on the pitch and tried to help us.

“We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again.”

The news comes after Liverpool announced the signings of two new centre-backs, Davies and Kabak.

Davies has signed from Preston for an initial fee believed to be in the region of £500,000, plus structured add-ons.

Kabak, meanwhile, has joined on loan from Schalke for an initial £1million with the club given the option to buy for £18m at the end of the season.

Liverpool’s resources in central defence have been stretched to the limit this season with Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez unlikely to play again this season due to serious knee injuries.

Fabinho, who has stood in at the back for the majority of matches this season, will not return until Sunday’s visit of Manchester City and so fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson has had to fill in for the last four league matches.
