It is now 19 straight victories for Pep Guardiola’s side thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus as their form in all competition remains strong.

The first leg of their last-16 clash was played in Budapest and was the away leg for City giving them a huge advantage ahead of the second leg at the Etihad.

Guardiola’s side rarely looked in any danger throughout the whole game even though there were five changes made from the side who beat Arsenal.

Jesus returned as centre forward and Phil Foden also started, while Aymeric Laporte came in to partner Ruben Dias in central defence. Kyle Walker and Rodri also featured.

Joao Cancelo gave Gladbach plenty of problems in the first half and provided a magnificent assist for Silva after 29 minutes.

The 26-year-old pounced on a loose pass by the opposition defence and crossed for teammate Bernardo Silva.

The pass was inch perfect and Silva was able to nod home to give City the lead.

City’s dominance continued with Cancelo and Foden firing narrowly over but it remained 1-0 at half-time.

City doubled their lead on 65 minutes. Again it came from a Cancelo cross to Silva, but this time the scorer of the first goal headed back across the area. Jesus applied the finishing touches as he slid in.

It finished 2-0 to City giving Guardiola’s side a big advantage heading into the second leg as they look for a place in the quarter-final.

And former England defender Stuart Pearce has backed City as one of the main contenders to win the Champions League this season with things seemingly going well for them at the moment.

Pearce told talkSPORT: “Without a doubt (they are one of the favourites) with the squad they’ve got. Sometimes you look at teams and think what is the injury situation like and other variable that sometimes are out of your control.

“They are fully fit, most of the players are showing top quality form and the goals are coming from anywhere, they are not conceding.”
