You can only pick one Premier League striker: Peter Crouch or Luis Suarez?
The latter will be rightly be remembered as a Liverpool great. He won the Golden Boot, PFA Player of the Year, FWA Player of the Year and the European Golden Shoe during his time at Anfield.
However, he didn’t have as good a Premier League career as former Reds striker Peter Crouch. At least that’s what Ally McCoist believes.
A goal machine in his day, the talkSPORT Breakfast host was quick to point out Suarez is the better player and has had the better career overall but believes Crouch offered more to the English top flight.
The Uruguayan was at Liverpool for three-and-a-half years and spearheaded their push for the Premier League title in 2013/14 which saw them pipped to the post by Manchester City.
Although he only won one trophy with the Reds (the League Cup in 2012), Suarez picked up a number of individual accolades before joining Barcelona in 2014 for a £75million fee.
Crouch’s individual prizes look more modest. The most eye-catching ones saw him win the club player of the year award when at Portsmouth and Stoke.
But it’s Crouch’s Premier League longevity that do it for Ally when it comes to this debate. Crouch played in the top flight for 17 years of his 21-year playing career.
The discussion on Tuesday morning was started when thoughts turned to Suarez, who will be hoping to break Chelsea hearts in the Champions League with Atletico Madrid.
Ally and former Premier League striker Darren Bent were both asked by Laura Woods – from a Premier League point of view – to pick a winner between Suarez and Jamie Vardy. They were both in agreement that Leicester hitman Vardy had a better Premier League career, having also won the Golden Boot and most importantly getting a league winners’ medal.
But the pair disagreed on Suarez vs Crouch as Bent believes the Atletico Madrid man edges it.
“This may sound ridiculous but I don’t think there’s any way you can go for Suarez,” Ally said.
“It’s impossible to go for him, how long was he at Liverpool and how long was Crouchy in the Premier League?
“Who’s had the better time in the Premier League? I think it’s got to be Crouchy.”
Bent asked Ally who he’d put in his starting XI if he had a choice and the latter admitted he’d put in the ‘different class’ Suarez.
The debate ended with the two deciding who had the better Premier League career out of Bent and Suarez. Bent said Suarez but Ally said it was Bent ‘all the way’.
Don’t be harsh on yourself, Benty!
