Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang responded on Instagram to claims made by Jamie Redknapp that he is ‘past it’ and has ‘lost his superpowers’.
The Arsenal forward did his talking on the pitch and netted two crucial goals as his side beat Benfica to reach the last-16 of the Europa League on Thursday evening.
Aubameyang has not been at his best for large parts of this season, scoring just three times in the first 16 games of the Premier League campaign.
He returned after an absence, for family reasons, to hit a hat-trick against Leeds – but that led to the comments by former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp.
“Aubameyang is past his best,” he said. “He’s going to have moments; he’s going to get hat-tricks.
“But when I watch him sometimes, it’s like he’s lost his superpower.
“I saw him run past people when he first came to the Premier League. I saw him run past people at Dortmund.
“Now I’m seeing a player who looks like he’s going to get bullied.”
Aubameyang shared a post on Instagram after Arsenal beat Benfica, as he laughed off Redknapp’s comments using a crying emoji over a screenshot of the article.
Manager Mikel Arteta had addressed the comments made by the now Sky Sports pundit before their Europa League game.
“I don’t know I didn’t see those comments I heard about them,” said Arteta.
“I’m here to support every single player in the squad in the squad and all the time give them the best possible advice, play them in their qualities and when they have difficult stay right behind them. That’s what we’ve tried with Auba.”
