Thomas Tuchel fumes at Callum Hudson-Odoi’s ‘attitude’ as Chelsea winger gets subbed on and off because he ‘couldn’t help’

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed why he hauled off half-time substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi after just 30 minutes on the pitch against Southampton.

The Blues boss continued his unbeaten start at his new club as Chelsea claimed a point in a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s this afternoon, but he was obviously frustrated with the result at the final whistle.

And Hudson-Odoi bore the brunt of that frustration after his brief appearance on the south coast.

The 20-year-old England international replaced Tammy Abraham at the half-time break after the striker suffered damage to his ankle.

But Hudson-Odoi was soon taken off himself, as he became the first Chelsea player to be subbed on and subbed off in the same Premier League game this season.

Fans were left puzzled by the decision from the boss, with the players not appearing to have suffered any injury problems.

And the boss admitted after the game we was ‘not happy with his attitude’ and level of performance after coming off the bench.

Tuchel told talkSPORT: “It was not the gameplan, I was not happy with his attitude against the ball, he forgot the counter-pressing situation sometimes.

“We talked about how we expected his energy, work rate and strife from the games. I trust him a lot, I think he’s played every match. But today I was not happy.

“I had the feeling he could not help and he did not accept the intensity that is needed. I took this decision, it’s a hard decision today. But tomorrow it’s forgotten.”
