It is going from bad to worse for Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.
Spurs fell to a fifth defeat in six Premier League matches thanks to a 2-1 loss at West Ham on Sunday to leave Spurs ninth place and nine points behind the Hammers in fourth.
It was Mourinho’s 50th match in charge of Spurs match and the 81 points won represents his worst league return throughout his illustrious career.
Having won trophies at Chelsea, Porto, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United, his appointment was supposed to signal a change in Spurs’ mentality from nearly men to serial winners.
That hasn’t happened yet, although they are in the Europa League knockout stages and have a Cup final to prepare for.
However, this run of form for Mourinho is way worse than the 95 points won as Man United boss after 50 league games.
The pressure is now on with Tottenham recording just three wins from their last 13 league matches.
Jose Mourinho's points tally after 50 league matches
- Porto – 124 points
- Chelsea (first spell in charge) 126
- Inter Milan – 113
- Real Madrid – 123
- Chelsea (second spell in charge) – 114
- Manchester United – 95
- Tottenham – 81
Spurs face Man City in the Carabao Cup final in April, but a first trophy in 13 years still may not be enough to keep star striker Harry Kane if they do not qualify for European football next season.
Tottenham’s latest setback occurred thanks to goals from Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard as the club’s leaky defence was exposed again.
Mourinho blamed defensive errors for his side’s defeat at the London Stadium.
He told talkSPORT: “We cannot make defensive mistakes. Why did they win?
“They won because they didn’t commit one single defensive mistake. Even our goal is a great goal from a great cross in a position which is very difficult to defend.
“For the whole 90 minutes, they defend and they defend brilliantly.
“We are always punished by our defensive mistakes which also have an impact on the way the team plays because it is hard to lift the morale.”
