Manchester United may be in the last eight of the FA Cup but their Tuesday night triumph was another miserable match for Donny van de Beek.
The Dutch midfielder has struggled to make an impact since joining the Red Devils from Ajax for £40million last summer, starting just two of their 23 Premier League matches this season.
Cup competitions have been an easier route into the first team for Van de Beek, but he was unable to impose himself against the Hammers.
With the FA Cup tie goalless, Van de Beek was hauled off the pitch on 73 minutes with Bruno Fernandes introduced in his place.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side went on to win the tie at Old Trafford, with Scott McTominay scoring the decisive goal in extra-time.
Man United’s midfield is particularly competitive, with Fernandes, McTominay, Paul Pogba, Fred and Nemanja Matic all vying for a place in the starting XI.
The latest result has only led to more questions about Van de Beek’s suitability to the club and if Man United perhaps regret signing him.
“I thought he was totally ineffective and he has been every time I’ve seen him play,” The Sun’s Neil Custis told Wednesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“In his defence he needs a run in the team, but I’m beginning to wonder why they actually bought him.
“He’s hardly played, and when he is played he just doesn’t seem to fit in.
“Last night he just didn’t seem to know where he was going; they just had to bring Bruno Fernandes on even though they wanted to rest him, or the chance of winning a cup would slip away from them.
“I’m wondering whether they saw a player they thought would do it for Manchester United, but when he arrived and they got training with him and working with him they thought, ‘hang on, is there a 15-day sell-back clause?’ He just hasn’t done it.”
