Rangers’ visit to Celtic this weekend could reportedly be scrapped as police fear more mass gatherings among fans.
Gers head into the Old Firm derby at Parkhead having just wrapped up their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade, stopping their Glasgow rivals from winning their tenth in a row.
It sparked wild scenes of celebration across the city last weekend, despite strict lockdown regulations in Scotland to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
First minister Nicola Sturgeon condemned the supporters who gathered and criticised Rangers over their lack of action, while police were forced to make several arrests.
The Scottish Police Federation want assurances there won’t be any repeat of those scenes this weekend, however it is understood there are already plans among Rangers fans to gather at both Ibrox and Parkhead.
As a result, cancellation of the fixture is a ‘very real’ possibility, according to The Sun.
A law-enforcement source told the newspaper said: “There needs to be assurances that there will be no repeats of what happened at the weekend — but everyone knows this is going to be a challenge.
“The responsibility falls on the clubs, but will fans really listen to them?
“There have already been indications some supporters plan to gather at Parkhead on March 21.
“What officers had to deal with at the weekend was bad enough, without adding in rivalry and the potential for violence.
“Calling the game off is a very real possibility.”
