Chelsea urged to sign Erling Haaland to ‘compete for title’ again as ‘magic’ Borussia Dortmund ace is branded as perfect transfer for Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea must go all out to sign Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland in order to solve their goalscoring woes, Joe Cole believes.

The Blues boast one of the best defensive records in the Premier League since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in January but their forward line is struggling to click into gear.

On Saturday, Tuchel’s men laboured to a 0-0 stalemate with Leeds at Elland Road and their attacking struggles were evident for all to see.

Haaland has developed into a superstar since joining the Dortmund in January 2020, scoring 47 goals in 47 appearances.

Earlier this week, the 20-year-old played a huge role in helping Dortmund advance to the quarter-finals with two goals against Sevilla.

He also etched himself into the record books by becoming the quickest player to reach 20 goals in the competition – taking just 14 games to reach that feat!

And Cole believes that in order for his old side to truly challenge for titles, they need to sign a player in the ilk of the blossoming striker.

“They need one player for me, Haaland. He’s on the wish-list.” Cole told BT Sport. ‘He’s a No.9. There’s so much in this squad, there’s quality in all areas, such a strong squad.

“You just need that one sparkle of magic, that No.9, that focal point and it will change this club getting back to the glory days of challenging for the title regularly.”

Tuchel confirmed he plans to use Kai Havertz as a No.9 with the German preferred to lead the line in Chelsea’s last two outings.

“I feel Kai is very comfortable in high positions to drop into half spaces from the high positions to turn and drive with the ball and use his speed,” Tuchel said after the stalemate.

“But he also arrives very naturally in the box to finish our attacks. He is comfortable in finishing.

“He can play as a No.9, as a half striker or a winger. Today we used him as a No.9. I am happy, unfortunately he could not finish like he finishes in training or his talent allows him to finish. I trust him in this position.”
