Declan Rice or Harry Maguire could be England vice-captain at Euro 2020 if Jordan Henderson misses out through injury as Conor Coady faces ‘real battle’ to make squad

Darren Bent has claimed Declan Rice or Harry Maguire could be named England’s vice-captain at Euro 2020.

Rice, who has captained West Ham for large parts of the season, looks to have nailed down the defensive midfield role in Gareth Southgate’s team, while Manchester United captain Maguire is an established name in the line-up.

Jordan Henderson is deputy to England skipper Harry Kane, but could miss the tournament with a groin injury.

Explaining England’s vice-captaincy options, Bent told talkSPORT: “Potentially Harry Maguire, he could get the armband.

“I quite like the thought of Declan Rice. He’s been captain for West Ham.”

Wolves captain Conor Coady has enjoyed a breakthrough season at international level and started in England’s 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over San Marino on Thursday night.

While Bent has hailed Coady’s leadership qualities, he believes the defender faces a ‘real battle’ to make Southgate’s squad for Euro 2020.

The former Tottenham and England striker added: “During this pandemic with no fans [inside stadiums], we’ve managed to hear what is being said on the pitch.

“When you watch Wolves or England, the one voice you always hear is Conor Coady. He’s screaming.

“Do I think he’ll start the very first game at the Euros? I don’t. It’s going to be a real battle [for him] to get in the squad.”
