Gareth Southgate MUST pick Aaron Wan-Bissaka over Reece James for this summer’s European Championships.
That is the view of talkSPORT co-host and Watford striker Troy Deeney, who believes the Manchester United man’s superior defensive qualities would offer something different for the Three Lions at the tournament.
Chelsea full-back James has been brilliant since breaking through at Stamford Bridge last season and has earned plaudits for his attacking prowess down the right flank.
Wan-Bissaka, meanwhile, is less able offensively but has brilliant defensive abilities when marking attackers one-on-one.
The Red Devils defender has not been called up to England’s senior squad yet and with an abundance of options on the right available to Southgate – including Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold – his hopes of making the 23-man squad are thin.
Deeney, however, believes he would offer something different to the other players.
“It’s not personal, just an opinion; I don’t think Reece James goes over Wan-Bissaka,” he told talkSPORT. “I don’t think he should have been in this squad over Wan-Bissaka.
“He doesn’t always start for Chelsea, that’s a main (reason). But I just think Wan-Bissaka is so good defensively.
“You can say what you want about (Wan-Bissaka) with the ball, but when it comes to the nitty-gritty you’re going to need someone who will clamp down on their winger, knows his role, does his job, get the ball and give it to the better players – that’s what you need in those situations.
“I’d back (Wan-Bissaka) or Kyle Walker because he’s so fast. But I’d have Wan-Bissaka.”
