Football has moved on from Jose Mourinho’s tactics after Tottenham’s loss at Arsenal, says former Manchester United striker Andy Cole, as damning stat emerges

Andy Cole has suggested football has moved on from Jose Mourinho’s tactics.

Arsenal inflicted a ninth Premier League defeat of the season on Mourinho’s Tottenham as the Gunners came from behind to beat their rivals 2-1 on Sunday.

It is the joint-most amount of losses Mourinho has ever suffered in a league campaign since his dreadful 2015/16 campaign with Chelsea.

Former Manchester United striker Cole believes Mourinho’s counter-attacking tactics are outdated.

He told talkSPORT: “Jose is what he is. Everything moves on.

“The way he wants to play football now… football doesn’t stand still.

“If you look at all the top teams and how they try to play now, Manchester City, Liverpool, everyone is trying to catch them.

“So the only way you’re going to catch them is, ultimately, by playing the same kind of football as they do.”

Despite Tottenham languishing in seventh place at the moment, they have a Carabao Cup final against Man City next month and hold a 2-0 first leg lead over Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League last-16.

And Cole insists Spurs fans should not be disappointed with their season so far.

He added: “From a league perspective, they’d be disappointed with their league position so far.

“Three or four months ago, everyone was very happy with their form, they were doing well and then they lost a little bit of confidence. They lost a few games and slowly their league form has been rather disappointing.

“But they’re in the League Cup final, [almost] in the Europa League quarter-finals.

“If they win the League Cup final, it’s a tough game… anything can happen.”
