‘I love Trent Alexander-Arnold, but he’s gone off the boil’ – Gareth Southgate was RIGHT to leave Liverpool star out of England squad, says Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp believes Gareth Southgate was right to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the England squad and thinks it will be a learning experience for the young defender.

The Liverpool right-back has been up there with the best in Europe over the last two seasons as the Reds won the Champions League and Premier League.

This season has been a different story, though, amid Liverpool’s struggles in the league.

He’s scored just once and has just three assists. In the 2018/19 season he got 12 assists and in the 2019/20 campaign he got 13.

Former Tottenham and West Ham boss Redknapp thinks that, on form, it was the right call to omit him from the squad for the internationals at the end of March.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Redknapp said: “I was his biggest fan. I thought he was absolutely incredible. You look and he’s everything you wanted. The energy to get forward, he crossed it and was the complete all round full-back for me.

“This year, I’ve noticed a massive drop off in his form. He hasn’t played with that intensity, he doesn’t get close to people and saunters when he’s lost it.

“He was off the boil. I must be truthful and I was his biggest fan. It won’t do him any harm.

“He’s left him out the squad and it will give him a kick up the backside and he realises he will have to fight for that spot.

“I love Trent Alexander-Arnold. I think he’s an amazing talent, he’s gone off the boil and if you are picking a team on form, Liverpool have conceded goals galore, and he wouldn’t be in the team.”

Redknapp was also happy to see Ollie Watkins in the squad and thinks there is lots of unrealised potential in the lower leagues.

“It just shows you there is talent if you’re willing to take the chance,” Redknapp added. “He came from Exeter through the division to Brentford and to the Premier League.

“There’s talent down there, if you give them the opportunity.

“It’s good to see that a lad like that who’s probably not had it easy, he’s had to work his way up through the ranks.

“He wasn’t a schoolboy star at the top level but now he’s got to the England squad and he looks like great lad as well.”
