‘Intelligent’ Phil Foden hailed by Gareth Southgate – but England boss told to leave ‘overhyped’ Man City star at home for Euro 2020

Gareth Southgate might be a big Phil Foden fan, but this talkSPORT caller doesn’t even think he deserves a seat on the plane for Euro 2020.

The Man City starlet looks almost certain to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the tournament having impressed with 11 goals and nine assists this season.

However, this Chelsea supporter remains unconvinced by Foden following his 45-minute cameo in England’s 5-0 win over San Marino, in which he registered an assist.

Martin said: “For months now, I’ve thought Phil Foden is rather overhyped and tonight proved it.”

Asked by talkSPORT host Jason Cundy if he was joking, Martin replied: “No. Every time he’s tried to go forward, they’ve tackled him.

“He didn’t get past one of them once. I didn’t see him make one successful dribble. Every time they tried to go past him, they went past him! He didn’t stop them once.

“He’s not in a fantastic England squad and he’s done absolutely nothing for 45 minutes.”

England have several attacking midfielders currently injured, including James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Harvey Barnes, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford.

And Martin insists he would leave Foden at home for Euro 2020 if Aston Villa captain Grealish is fit.

He explained: “If you look at it statistically, apart from goalscoring, Jack Grealish and [Mason] Mount rank much higher than Foden.

“Key passes, they’re almost double, triple him in the Premier League.

“If Grealish is fit, I wouldn’t take Foden.”

In a stark contrast of views, Southgate has hailed Foden ahead of England’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Albania on Sunday.

He said: “He’s just a very good player; very exciting, a player who is intelligent in his positioning.

“He has skills to receive the ball under pressure and take players out of the game with his tight control.

“He has a lovely range of passing. And what’s most important is he has a real eye for goal and a hunger to score.”
