Karim Benzema becomes just fifth player in history to register 70 Champions League goals as Real Madrid striker joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on prestigious list following Atalanta victory

Karim Benzema became just the fifth player in history to register 70 goals in the Champions League as Real Madrid eased past Atalanta 3-1 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

After goalkeeper Marco Sportiello kicked the ball straight to Luka Modric, Benzema was in the right place at the right time to slot home to put Los Blancos in command of the tie in the first half.

It was the Frenchman’s 70th goal in the Champions League and means just four players have scored more in the competition than him.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo (134), Lionel Messi (120), Robert Lewandowski (73) and Raul (71) have hit more than the Real striker in Europe’s elite competition.

Benzema’s goal, which was his fourth the European campaign, also meant he had scored Real’s last four goals before Sergio Ramos and Marco Asensio got in on the act.

Ramos sealed the victory for Real in the second-half from the spot after Vinicius Junior was brought down in the area.

It was the Real Madrid’s captain 101st goal for the club and has put him further up the list of the top scoring defenders of all time.

Luis Muriel grabbed a consolation for Atalanta late on but they were unable to stage a comeback and Marco Asensio sealed the comfortable victory for the hosts late on with a low finish.
