Liverpool are the ‘Willy Wonka of the Champions League’ as every team will want Reds for a ‘golden ticket through’ to semi-finals

Liverpool are the weakest side remaining in the Champions League and the ‘golden ticket through to the last four’ of the competition.

That’s according to Sports Bar co-host Andy Goldstein, who remains unconvinced by the Reds’ credentials in European football’s premier competition after a torrid run of form domestically.

Jurgen Klopp’s men advanced through to the quarter-finals at RB Leipzig’s expense with relative ease on Wednesday with goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane sealing a 2-0 win on the night.

But that despite that convincing 4-0 aggregate win, Goldstein is convinced that EVERY team left in the competition would want to face the current Premier League holders in the next round.

“I’m genuinely not saying this to wind people up, but I do think as poor as Liverpool are and the injuries they’ve got, I think they’re the team that everyone in the Champions League wants,” Goldstein explained.

“I think they’re the golden ticket through to the last four – I honestly do. I look at the other teams in the competition and I look at them and I think Liverpool are probably the weakest side in the competition.

“Liverpool are the Willy Wonka of the Champions League. No-one actually wants to take on Porto, Dortmund, PSG. No-one actually wants Real Madrid or Bayern or Man City or Chelsea.

“I think everyone wants Liverpool. They’re playing appallingly in the Premier League – you can’t deny that. I think they’re the golden ticket.”

Goldstein also expressed his bemusement at what he deemed excessive praise in Klopp’s direction for moving makeshift defender Fabinho back into his preferred position of midfield.

He added: “I’ve looking on social media and I’ve seen it was a masterstroke by Klopp to put Fabinho in midfield…. a masterstroke?!

“It’s also a masterstroke to put a goalkeeper in goal… well done!

“Trent playing at full-back as well… masterstroke! Here’s what Klopp did tonight. He played a midfielder in midfield and he played two centre-halves at centre-half. Masterstroke from Jurgen Klopp. Well done!”
