Erling Haaland would be cheap at £100million this summer, talkSPORT has been told, as the Borussia Dortmund starlet continues to dazzle on the biggest stage.
The teenage sensation became the quickest player to reach 20 Champions League goals in the history of the competition after his brace sent Sevilla crashing out of the competition on Tuesday night.
Still only 20, Haaland well and truly has the world at his feet and Cundy believes the Bundesliga side might be tempted to cash in on their prized asset before the Norwegian’s £68m release clause becomes active in 2022.
“I know it’s ridiculous saying this, but you could Haaland quite cheap [this summer],” Cundy said on the latest instalment of Sports Bar.
“I think Dortmund might be tempted at £100million.
“That’s double and above what they’re going to get next year [when his release clause becomes active]. You’re probably going to get him at £120million.
“He’s in so much control and power. He might decide he wants to stay at Dortmund for another year where he’s enjoying his football and he’s progressing nicely. He’s obviously settled into the system and the way they’re playing.
“From what I’ve seen I don’t think there’s too many systems he can’t be effective in. He’s got a little bit of everything, he’s an absolute monster.”
Cundy’s co-host Andy Goldstein posed the question whether Manchester City, given the choice, would prefer to sign Lionel Messi or Haaland – to which the former Chelsea defender’s response was emphatic.
“If it was down to me I’d go with Haaland,” Cundy added. “He’s a bit of a throwback. He’s a bit like that No.9 we grew up watching [Mark Hateley].
“He’s ridiculous, that’s the best way to describe him. His numbers are off the scale.”
Meanwhile, earlier in the evening Jim Proudfoot waxed lyrical over Haaland on Kick Off – and made quite the claim about the
“Haaland is 20 and doesn’t turn 21 until July. He’s already scored 72 league goals in his career. He’s got 29 already this season.
“He’s an unbelievable talent,” the talkSPORT commentator said.
“He scores all kinds of different goals. It’s not just predatory instinct, they’re not just scruffy tap-ins. He’s got great poise and looks so ungainly.
“You see him for the first time and think to yourself ‘what’s all the fuss about?’ and then he’ll do something inside the penalty area and you think ‘okay, that’s what he’s all about’.
“He’s an extraordinary player and if he was to come to the Premier League and you stick him in that Man City side he’d score 50 a season in the league.
“I think he could score 50 goals in a 38-game season if he played every game.”
