Patrick Bamford gives perfect response after England snub with goal and assist in Leeds’ win at Fulham

Patrick Bamford wasted no time in giving Gareth Southgate a reminder that perhaps he should have been picked for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The striker played the starring role at Craven Cottage with a goal and an assist in Leeds’ 2-1 win over Fulham on Friday night.

Bamford was a notable absentee from Southgate’s squad announced on Thursday and his goal made him the second top scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season – only Harry Kane has more.

Leeds thought they had opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but VAR ruled Tyler Roberts offside in the build-up and Luke Ayling’s header was disallowed.

It would have been Ayling’s first Premier League goal for the club and he celebrated in style by letting down his hair and playing the air guitar.

Unfortunately, the defender had to watch on as a lengthy VAR review resulted in the goal being chalked off.

Leeds did eventually take the lead just before the half-hour mark.

Jack Harrison’s cross found Bamford, who made no mistake in putting it past Alphonse Areola to break the deadlock.

It was his 14th Premier League goal of the season, only two behind Kane’s total of 16 – the top scoring Englishman in the top flight.

Leeds’ goal advantage did not last long, however, with Joachim Andersen equalising for Fulham from an Ademola Lookman corner, the 15th time Bielsa’s men have conceded from a corner this season.

Andersen beat Ayling to the ball before hitting the back of the net with a first-time strike for his first club goal since his arrival on loan from Lyon in the summer transfer window.

At the start of the second half, Fulham had to weather the Leeds pressure as they pushed for a second – which came in the 58th minute after another quick break.

Kalvin Phillips dispossessed Mario Lemina before another defensive error from Fulham allowed the ball to be played through to Bamford, who found Raphinha with the winger able to slot past Areola.

Leeds kept pushing forward to score a third to kill the game off but it was not needed in the end as they came away 2-1 winners.

The defeat was not what Fulham manager Scott Parker wanted as his side remain in the drop zone, two points off safety having played twice more than Newcastle and Brighton, in 17th and 16th respectively.
