It’s been a long old road but Rangers are finally about to end Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football.
Steven Gerrard’s men were welcomed on arrival to Ibrox by their adoring fans ahead of St Mirren’s visit, and with good reason too.
Gers have yet to taste defeat in 32 league matches this season and goals from Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi sealed a comfortable 3-0 win in their latest outing.
It means Celtic’s bid for ten league titles in a row is on the verge of ending and Rangers could even be Scottish champions for the first time since 2011 this weekend.
Anything less than a win for Celtic against Dundee United on Sunday will see that happen.
However, a win for Celtic would give Gerrard’s men the chance to seal the title at Celtic Park, with the two Glasgow sides locking horns on March 21.
It’s often said about a formidable team that the match was over before it started. It may not have quite been the case here but the contest was as good as over after 16 minutes.
Quickfire goals by Kent and Morelos saw Rangers race to a 2-0 lead in the space of three first-half minutes, with Gerrard looking on from the stands having been sent off at Livingston on Wednesday.
Hagi made sure there would be no St Mirren fightback with a goal in the first minute of the first half and Rangers were cruising from then on.
The title isn’t confirmed yet but the celebrations were in full swing as the final whistle went. Rangers players gathered to a corner of Ibrox to celebrate the win with fans who were stood outside the stadium.
