Kemar Roofe was sent off for Rangers against Slavia Prague for one of the worst tackles in recent times as the new Scottish Premiership champions’ long Europa League journey came to an end.
Just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute, the former Leeds striker was making his way back off after his high tackle on Ondrej Kolar left blood pouring from the goalkeeper’s head.
Chasing a long Goldson pass, Roofe lunged forward with a high boot that flew into the keeper’s face and referee Orel Grinfeld immediately flashed red.
He was sent off as Steven Gerrard’s men chased an equaliser following Peter Olayink opener after just 13 minutes.
And things got even worse for Rangers shortly after Roofe’s dismissal.
Just 12 minutes later, Leon Balogun was also handed his marching orders for a second yellow after crunching into Jan Boril.
Gers’ remarkable run was all but killed off as Nicolae Stanciu swept home a stunning free-kick to make it 2-0 on the night.
Jason Cundy said that Roofe deserved a lengthy ban for his ‘cowards’ challenge following Rangers’ defeat.
“He should be banned for six games,” he told the Sports Bar. “It’s an appalling challenge, maybe eight (games). They need to throw the book at him for a long time as it’s a disgusting, appalling challenge.
“The keeper couldn’t play on. He knows what he’s doing. He’s followed through with his studs on his head. I’d ban him for eight or ten games. He can have no complaints.
“It’s a cowards challenge as well as he knows the goalkeeper has to go with his hands. He knows that he’s going to lead with his foot, follows through, catches him on the head.
“It’s appalling.”
