David McGoldrick has revealed the Sheffield United players did not know about Chris Wilder’s sacking until they saw it on Twitter during a chaotic 48 hours.
Wilder’s five-year reign at Bramall Lane came to an unusual end earlier this month, after reports that he would leave the club went unconfirmed for days.
Press conferences were cancelled, creating mass confusion among fans – and it seems the players were left clueless as well.
Paul Heckingbottom was eventually appointed interim manager, stepping up from the club’s youth team, and took charge for a 5-0 defeat at Leicester after mere moments with his new set of players.
McGoldrick, the Blades’ top scorer this season, admits his best source of information about the club’s future came via social media during the tumultuous overhaul.
He told talkSPORT: “It was tough. The weird thing about it was that it came out of the blue from nowhere.
“We got into training as normal, got into the treatment room and someone said, ‘Look at this on Twitter! Someone’s posted something saying the gaffer’s going to be sacked’.
“Usually, you hear certain things. We heard there was talk a few months ago. We had found some form.
“There was no confirmation for 48 hours, the boys didn’t properly meet Hecky [Heckingbottom].
“People think we’ve seen him a lot, but we’re in different bubbles completely. The Under-23s aren’t allowed anywhere near us.
“He hasn’t seen how we work and we haven’t seen how we work. To be thrown in at the deep end for the Leicester game was a real tough week for the lads.”
Wilder, a boyhood Sheffield United fan, took over in May 2016 and guided the Blades from the foot of League One to the Premier League in three years.
His revolutionary tactics, featuring overlapping centre-backs, as well as his no-nonsense attitude with the media, was a welcome addition to the top-flight as Sheffield United finished ninth in 2019/20.
However, this season has been a different story entirely, and the rock-bottom Blades look certain to be relegated.
Nonetheless, McGoldrick fancies Wilder to prove himself all over again, perhaps at a club like Celtic – who are on the hunt for a new manager.
The striker added: “I’m sure he’ll get a big job somewhere.
“Celtic need someone to go in there with big ideas, Wilder will go in there with his own ideas.
“He would change that club, he’d get the boys playing for them.”
