Steven Gerrard is truly the toast of Glasgow – the blue half at least – as his Rangers side were confirmed as Scottish champions over the weekend.
He’s stopped Rangers’ rivals Celtic from claiming ten league titles in a row and has also dispelled the idea that Scottish sides are a soft touch in Europe with excellent performances in the Europa League.
It’s been some journey for Gerrard, who took charge of a ‘shambles of a club’ at Ibrox back in 2018 but now Rangers are Scotland’s best and a feared team on the continent.
The success he’s brought to Rangers has been likened to what Jurgen Klopp has done at Liverpool, according to former Rangers boss Alex McLeish.
McLeish told talkSPORT 2: “When you’re a footballer it’s a great honour to make the grade, it’s brilliant. When you’re a manager you know you have to satisfy thousands and thousands of people, especially at a club like Rangers.
“Stevie’s absolutely in the hall of fame in his first managerial job; an absolutely incredible season.
“It’s taken a wee process, about three years, kind of similar to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.”
But amid all the elation at Rangers winning league title no.55, a concern lurks in the back of the minds of all Gers fans regarding Gerrard’s future.
Things are far from ideal on the red half of Merseyside. Liverpool are currently eighth in the Premier League and they’re in serious danger of not qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
It’s led to suggestions that Klopp could leave his post as Reds manager with many tipping Gerrard to succeed the German.
Like all Rangers fans, former player Kenny Miller admits Gerrard could go to Liverpool but insists he won’t be forgotten by the club he’s currently in charge of no matter what happens.
Miller told Jim White: “No matter what goes on in his career, he will never ever be forgotten by Rangers fans.
“Rangers leaves a mark on people and I’m sure it will have left a mark on him, his staff and all the players he’s brought up to Glasgow.
“Speaking as a fan we want him to stay. We hope that he, his staff and his team are hungry for more and by listening to how they speak I think they are – but you just never know.
“When players and managers are doing well they’re always going to be sought after.
“We hope as Rangers fans he’ll be here for the long term and he’ll bring regular success back to the club because this is the first step of it, and it’s been an outstanding season.”
