West Ham’s top four hopes suffered a blow with a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.
The Hammers missed the chance to go level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea as Craig Dawson’s own goal proved to be the difference at Old Trafford.
West Ham set up in a back five shape with club captain Mark Noble replacing Jesse Lingard, who was unable to play against his parent club, in midfield.
And David Moyes’ side missed Lingard’s creativity as they failed to register a shot on target.
With West Ham defending in a low block, Marcus Rashford, who returned to the starting XI having recovered from an ankle injury, headed Mason Greenwood’s inviting cross wide in the 25th minute.
Greenwood was involved in everything good that the Red Devils did going forward as he saw a shot tipped on to the post by Lukasz Fabianski with eight minutes of the first-half remaining.
And the England winger continued to threaten West Ham’s backline after the break when his dangerous cross was almost turned into the net by Vladimir Coufal.
And from the resulting corner, Scott McTominay’s header took a wicked deflection off Dawson to beat Fabianski in the 53rd minute.
With West Ham barely laying a glove on United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, Fabianski kept his side in the game by denying Bruno Fernandes twice.
Greenwood could have sealed the points in the 77th minute, but he hit the post for a second time after collecting a pass from Marcus Rashford.
While United are 14 points behind leaders Man City in second place, they are getting closer to securing Champions League football for next season.
