Inter Milan are edging ever closer to ending Juventus’ stronghold of Italian football as they moved 13 points clear of the champions.
With Cristiano Ronaldo and co only managing a draw at Fiorentina, Inter extended their lead over their title rivals after claiming a 1-0 win at home to Verona.
The winner came from an unlikely source as substitute Matteo Darmian cut inside from the left and fired his effort low into the goal.
There wouldn’t have been good odds on the former Manchester United defender being the matchwinner before the match, however, he was their hero on April 11 as his goal gave Inter a 1-0 win over Cagliari.
It unsurprisingly sparked jubilant celebrations with Inter boss Antonio Conte right in the thick of it.
And with good reason, too, as this latest victory makes a first league title since 2010 for the Nerazzurri seem inevitable.
They can wrap it up next weekend when they face Crotone. Conte’s men would need to win, but also would require second-placed AC Milan to lose against either Lazio on Monday or Benevento on Saturday.
Juve have been the dominant force in Italian football in recent years having won the last nine Scudettos.
However, they’ve been well off the pace this term under Andrea Pirlo with former Inter boss Jose Mourinho being linked with his job after being sacked by Tottenham earlier this week.
