Jadon Sancho was left fuming at referee Ovidiu Hategan after he controversially denied Jude Bellingham a goal against Manchester City on his return to England.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder pounced on Ederson as the Brazilian juggled the ball before clearing it, managing to nab it off his toes.
Bellingham got a toe to the ball moments before Ederson completed his swing, with the City goalkeeper connecting only with the bottom of the midfielder’s boot.
As he began to writhe on the floor, the 17-year-old advanced onto the goal and prodded the ball home, only to be dismayed at the sound of Hategan’s whistle.
Because the official from Romania blew his whistle before the ball rolled into the back of the net, VAR could not be used to review the decision and Bellingham and his Dortmund teammates were remonstrating at the Etihad.
It was not just the Dortmund players on the pitch who took umbrage, with Sancho deciding to Tweet his displeasure as well.
“This ref needs checking,” he wrote, accompanying the Tweet with an emoji of a disgruntled individual performing a face palm action.
It was not the only controversial decision Hategan made in the first half of the Champions League quarter-final, awarding City a penalty for a high boot by Emre Can on Rodri.
Yet his blushes were spared somewhat by VAR as replays showed the foot was not only not high, Rodri had also handled the ball.
