Trevor Sinclair admits the mere sight of Jesse Lingard in a West Ham shirt puts a smile on his face.
Lingard has been a revelation since joining the Hammers on loan from Manchester United, scoring six goals and providing three assists since making the move in January.
The best of his West Ham goals arguably came during their 3-2 win at Wolves on Monday night as his fantastic solo effort gave them an early lead.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Lingard, who couldn’t get a game at Old Trafford before going to east London, has a future at Old Trafford again.
“He does an incredible amount of running,” Neville told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “It’s what he does. He’s good out of possession and good in possession.
“At Manchester United. because there is that expectation of what you need to be, to be a wide player there, he’s always going to get a difficult press.
“But if he was playing in a world-class team, if he was, say, Ji-Sung Park ten years ago playing with Ronaldo and Rooney, doing that supplementary role, then people would be saying he’s perfect for this squad.
“The problem is he was not playing in Manchester United teams as good as that, so he gets a bit of stick.
“He’s a really good player. He’s going to have a great career. Manchester United have sent him out to West Ham to boost his career, maybe with the thought of boosting his price tag, but they might be thinking, ‘actually, we might want him back, he could be a real help to us’.
“If Jesse wants to play, and you can see he does want to play, then he needs to leave, because he’s not going to play every single week for a Manchester United team that’s competing for second or first place in the league.
“But if he’s willing to go back there and compete and be the player that Dan James has been for the last few weeks, in and out, then there’s no doubt he can play for Manchester United.”
But Sinclair advised Lingard to stay at West Ham if he can, although he admits it could be out of the hands of his former club.
“We talk about the different players that they brought in and Jesse Lingard, he’s playing so well but he might be out of our price range,” he told talkSPORT. “That’s how well he’s playing.
“He had such an uncomfortable time at Manchester United being left out in the cold that he won’t want to go back out there and be a squad player.
“Look at him, six goals and three assists since he joined West Ham! I have to say I was a bit sceptical with all his handshakes and that but since he came to West Ham, he’s put a smile on my face.
“If you’re at a football club that appreciates and values you, why would you want to go?”
