Man City wonderkid Phil Foden overshadows Erling Haaland as Borussia Dortmund fume at ‘awful decision’ which denies Jude Bellingham crucial goal

Phil Foden outlined his world class potential with a match-winning display in Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final.

However, the Bundesliga outfit will feel aggrieved not to be returning to Germany with a lead to protect after a controversial decision from referee Ovidiu Hategan.

The hosts took the lead in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final after a mistake from former Liverpool player Emre Can.

With the ethereal Foden pulling the strings, City raced forward and there was a moment of incredible composure from Riyad Mahrez to find Kevin De Bruyne to sweep home.

Yet the visitors rallied and should have had a goal which their first half play deserved when Bellingham was adjudged to have fouled Ederson.

Stuart Pearce watched the highlights for talkSPORT and understood the frustration of the England international.

“It was an awful decision to start with, the goalkeeper has kicked Bellingham,” he said.

“From that, all he’s got to do is let the game run slightly and we can have a good look at the incident and reach the correct decision. Not good.”

Although City threatened to find a killer goal, it was the visitors who struck with just seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Jude Bellingham flicked the ball into the path of Haaland and, with his back to gaol, he flicked the ball into the path of the onrushing Reus to prod past the despairing Ederson.

Although renowned for his predatory instincts, the Norway striker showed incredible link up play on his potential audition in front of Pep Guardiola to stroke the pass first time into the pass of the Dortmund captain.

Yet it was another one of Europe’s top young talents who grabbed the headlines as De Bruyne swept in a glorious cross to find Ilkay Gundogan, who calmly dragged the ball back to Foden to sweep home.

The Stockport-native, who grabbed his 12th goal of the season, was forced to wait after a VAR check for offside, yet the goal was correctly given.

Dortmund proved why they are one of the best sides on the continent, with so much potential in the side and Jadon Sancho still to return, Edin Terzic’s side gave a wonderful account of themselves.
