Masked protestors attacked the home of Manchester United’s outgoing executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, last week in response to the club’s decision to join the now abolished European Super League, it has emerged.
United announced earlier this month that they were one of 12 clubs joining the breakaway competition – which resulted in an embarrassing u-turn just 48 hours later following a huge backlash to the controversial plans.
As first reported by Sky Sports News, a group of supporters caused damage to Woodward’s front gates at his home in Cheshire on Thursday.
No one was home at the time and it is understood police were not called.
Red Devils fans also crashed the club’s Carrington training ground in protest against the Glazer family on the same day, which led to an impromptu address from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Photographs emerged on social media showing a group of United supporters holding protest banners on the first-team training pitch, while others were pictured blocking the main entrance of the Training Complex.
Fellow coach Michael Carrick, as well as technical director Darren Fletcher and midfielder Nemanja Matic, are also understood to have addressed the group of fans.
This is not the first time that Woodward has been targeted by United fans after a protest was staged outside his home last January.
A group of people launched flares and a smoke bomb at the 48-year-old’s family residence, while some in attendance were heard chanting ‘he’s going to die’ in footage that was widely shared on social media.
Woodward is set to leave his Old Trafford post at the end of the year – news which talkSPORT exclusively brought to you.
On his impending departure, Woodward said: “I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years.
“The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.
“I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup
“I am proud of the regeneration of the club’s culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing.
“We have invested more than £1billion in the squad during my time here and I am particularly delighted with the progress the players have made under the astute leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching team in the last two years.
“I am sure that with the changes we have made on-field and to the coaching and football staff in recent years this great club will soon be lifting silverware again. It deserves to.
“I desperately wanted the club to win the Premier League during my tenure and I am certain that the foundations are in place for us to win it back for our passionate fans.”
