Patrick Bamford is no fan of the proposed European Super League – but admits that it’s ‘a shame’ that issues such as racism aren’t taken as seriously.
Twelve clubs – including the Premier League’s ‘big six’ – are part of drastic plans which would fundamentally alter the landscape of European football.
It is understood the Premier League has called its other 14 clubs to an emergency shareholders’ meeting on Tuesday morning, to which the ‘big six’ – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – have not been invited.
There were fan protests outside Elland Road ahead of Leeds’ clash with Liverpool on Monday night – which ended 1-1 – and speaking after the match Bamford spoke eloquently on the topic.
“We’ve just seen what pretty much everyone else has seen on Twitter,” Bamford said.
“It’s amazing the amount of opera that comes in to the game when somebody’s pockets are being hurt.
“It’s a shame it’s not like that when all the things that go wrong with things at the minute, racism and stuff like that.
“It’s something we talk about but once you’re on the pitch you’re not thinking about stuff that goes on outside the ground.
“We’re like fans really, we can’t believe it and we’re talking about it [amongst ourselves].
“We don’t know what’s going to happen and we’re in shock.
“I think that for me personally from what I’ve seen on Twitter and the news, I haven’t see one football fan who is happy about the decision.
“I think football ultimately is for the fans. Without the fans every single club would be pretty much nothing.
“It’s important we stand our ground and show that football is for the fans and try and keep it that way.”
Liverpool midfielder James Milner was unequivocal when asked for his views on the Reds playing in a Super League.
“Same as everyone, there is a lot of questions,” he said.
“I can only say my personal opinion, I don’t like it and hopefully it doesn’t happen.
“I can only imagine what has been said about it and I probably agree with most of it.
“I think the players obviously have no say, so the welcome we got to the ground tonight felt a bit unjust because we are here to play football and have no control of it.
“I think for us we just try and concentrate on the game, there is obviously a lot going on, but for us we just have to try and be professional and concentrate on the game that is the only thing we can control.”
