Paul Pogba joked he must ‘learn how to tackle’ after giving away a penalty in Manchester United’s impressive Europa League semi-final first leg victory over Roma on Thursday evening.
The Frenchman ran the show in the 6-2 victory but, not for the first time this season, was penalised after the ball struck his hand in the first half to give Roma an equaliser from the spot.
While his arm was in an unnatural position, and a penalty was probably in line with the rules, it felt incredibly harsh given Pogba wasn’t even looking at the ball.
It did not matter, though, as United, spearheaded by the infallible Edinson Cavani, delivered a clinic in finishing to put the Red Devils within touching distance of the final.
The Uruguayan hit two and played a hand in five of the six goals scored, with Bruno Fernandes also hitting a brace alongside Pogba and Mason Greenwood’s strikes.
Pogba, however, insisted the job was not done – though he joked he must work on his tackling following the penalty call.
He added: “I don’t know how to tackle. Why should I tackle? I need to practise more. I need to tackle without arms. It’s unlucky for me. But it’s OK. We are confident still.”
He added: “The result is positive but it’s not finished, there is one more leg. We have to stay focused and play the next game with the same mentality,” he told BT Sport.
“First half we made two mistakes and conceded two goals. After half-time we said just do the right things. We were motivated to score as many goals as possible.”
