Ryan Mason dedicated his first win as interim Tottenham boss to Ugo Ehiogu on the fourth anniversary of the defender’s death.
Spurs claimed their first victory in the post-Jose Mourinho era as they beat Southampton 2-1.
Mason took over as interim boss this week aged just 29, becoming the youngest person ever to take charge of a Premier League game.
Speaking after the game, Mason dedicated the victory to Ehiogu, who died on April 21, 2017 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Tottenham training ground.
He told Sky Sports: “Today as well there was quite a lot going on at the club as Ugo Ehiogu, I think it’s four years since he passed, so I dedicate that one to him and his family.
“He was a great man and everyone in the club still remembers him.”
Gareth Bale, a former teammate of Mason, and Heung-min Son scored to give Spurs an important three points.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, Mason said: “I feel very proud. Proud of the boys. I thought their attitude and the desire they showed was outstanding.
“It was an emotional game for many different reasons, but thankfully we got the win.
“I feel happy and everyone feels happy in there.”
Mason has had just two days to prepare his team following the sacking of Mourinho on Monday.
It was also against the backdrop of the botched European Super League plans, but Mason was delighted with what he saw from his side.
He said: “When you get two training sessions to prepare them, it’s difficult. We gave them key principles, but the most important message was to be brave and show desire.
“I thought we showed that. The determination in the second half to deal with the disallowed goal and we kept believing and kept going.
“I thought they fully deserved the win.”
Spurs now face Man City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with the main question being over Harry Kane’s fitness.
The striker missed the win over Southampton and has less than four days to be ready for the weekend’s game.
When asked if Kane would be fit, Mason said: “We hope so, but we don’t know. We’ll take it day-by-day and Harry is doing everything to be out on the pitch as soon as possible.
“Harry has just been getting treatment and taking it each day as it comes. He is one of the most committed footballers in the world for things like this.”
