Thiago Silva has only had two shockers in a Chelsea shirt – and they’ve both come against West Brom.
The 36-year-old veteran didn’t hang around for long on his return from injury, getting two yellow cards within 29 minutes against West Brom on Saturday.
Silva, who had been out for two months due to injury, showed uncharacteristic rustiness, first tugging back Matheus Pereira and then catching Okay Yokuslu with a late challenge.
Chelsea fans are not used to seeing their veteran defender so frazzled after such a fine season, but it’s beginning to become a regular occurrence against West Brom.
The Brazil captain gifted the Baggies their second goal during the dramatic 3-3 draw at the Hawthorns earlier this season – which made for a pretty horrible Premier League debut.
Speaking on commentary for talkSPORT, legendary West Ham defender Alvin Martin criticised the experienced defender for diving in.
“He goes to ground, he’s experienced enough to know he can’t make that challenge, he’s already seen yellow,” Martin said.
“In the end, David Coote’s got no choice but to give the second yellow.”
Silva’s red card, which came just moments after Christian Pulisic put Chelsea 1-0 up proved to be the beginning of their downfall.
Two goals in first-half stoppage-time saw the Baggies go 2-1 up at half time. Chelsea’s woes continued after the break as they shipped three goals to lose 5-2.
