Jamie Carragher launched a savage attack on Tottenham’s Serge Aurier after his foul helped Manchester City to a fourth successive Carabao Cup triumph on Sunday.
Spurs looked like they were taking the Wembley contest to extra-game as City failed to make their dominance count, before Aymeric Laporte headed home a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick late on.
It was little more than Pep Guardiola’s men deserved, but the goal could have been easily avoided – with Aurier taking the brunt of the blame.
Aurier was tasked with keeping the likes of Raheem Sterling quiet and it was the Man City forward who the Spurs right-back needlessly fouled for the decisive set-piece which led to City’s winner.
And Carragher, like former Spurs players Jamie Redknapp and Michael Dawson before him, made his feelings crystal clear regarding Aurier on Monday Night Football.
“It’s good skill [from Sterling], but it’s not good enough from this man [Aurier],” Carragher said.
“Raheem Sterling is on his weak foot and crossing [the ball] for a City team that don’t have a centre forward – let’s not forget.
“Aurier is maybe one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football and is a player who would possibly put you off management with the amount of crazy decision he makes.
“We know what happened with the goal, he ends up running off the pitch allowing Sterling – the worst thing you can do – on that right foot almost get the goal.”
Carragher also said he can understand why Spurs are regularly criticised after they were outclassed by City throughout proceedings – but refused to lay the blame for the defeat at the door of interim boss Ryan Mason.
He added: “When Spurs fans get upset the reason people speak about them in them terms is because of games like this.
“The last four cup finals they haven’t scored a goal. And this performance is basically why they’re stuck with this tag.
“And I can’t argue for them. And Spurs fans can’t argue for them on the back of this performance. It is on the players. Nothing to do with the manager.”
