Watch as Bernd Leno howler gifts Everton first win at Arsenal for 25 years following night of protests outside Emirates Stadium

Bernd Leno scored a shambolic own goal as Everton won 1-0 at Arsenal on Friday night.

The triumph was the Toffees’ first win at Arsenal since January 20, 1996 – over 25 years ago.

On the whole, the match was relatively unentertaining with headlines instead being made off the pitch as Gunners fans held pre-match protests over their ownership.

The goal finally came in the 76th minute.

Granit Xhaka’s defending at left-back came into question as Richarlison got away down the right wing.

The Brazilian entered the box and attempted to hit a low cross to Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the near post.

His pass was poor though and directed straight towards the arms of Leno.

However, the German stopper let it slip through his hands and bounce in off his right leg – a bizarre own goal.

Prior to kick-off, thousands of furious Arsenal fans amassed outside the Emirates Stadium to protest against club owner Stan Kroenke.

Chanting could be heard from the group early on: “F*** off Stan Kroenke, get out of our club.”

This was followed by continued choruses of: “We want our Arsenal back.”

The Everton result caps off a miserable week for the Gunners who were one of six Premier League clubs that initially agreed to join a breakaway competition designed at rivalling the Champions League.

Those controversial European Super League plans were met with widespread condemnation throughout football – resulting in an embarrassing u-turn from each of those clubs just 48 hours later.
