Emotional Gary Lineker gives touching reaction to Leicester’s FA Cup triumph over Chelsea and pays tribute to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha

Gary Lineker was clearly emotional after watching his boyhood team Leicester City win their first ever FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday.

The Foxes beat Chelsea 1-0 thanks to a second-half rocket from Youri Tielemans.

Lineker, who was born in the city and started his playing career at Leicester, enjoyed every moment of the celebrations from the punditry booth.

“Unbelievable, fantastic scenes,” he said at the full-time whistle.

“Extraordinary for all the Leicester supporters here watching this, it’s been such a long time.

“It’s the one they’ve wanted, they won the title just a few years ago of course – that was the biggest miracle of all.

“But this is also a trophy that has escaped them for so long and it means so much.”

At this point there was a quiver in Lineker’s voice as he added: “My dad went to all four finals, I wish he was still here, I hope he’s watching somewhere, I hope so…

“I was here 52 years ago, not exactly the same stadium.

“I had a different emotion on that occasion and I thought I was going to suffer a terrible fate again, but VAR saved the day for Leicester.”

Footage then showed the moment Lineker jumped up and down celebrating Tielemans’ winner.

He also paid tribute to the club’s owner Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha who took over the reigns after his father Vichai tragically died in a helicopter crash back in 2018.

“And a word on the owners,” Lineker continued.

“A massively emotional moment for him – his father was lost obviously in that helicopter crash three years ago.

“He’s come in, he’s carried on the great work of his father.

“He’ll be remembered today by all the Leicester fans, Vichai.”

A late Chelsea equaliser was ruled out by VAR for offside.

Alan Shearer quipped to Lineker: “I never, ever want to hear you talk about VAR ever again, is that a promise?

And he replied: “Yes that’s a promise.”
