Manchester United won’t challenge for major trophies with ‘sloppy’ and ‘lazy’ Fred alongside Scott McTominay in midfield, insists Roy Keane

Roy Keane insists his former side Manchester United will not win ‘any big trophies’ as long as Scott McTominay and Fred are the club’s midfield pairing.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men suffered their third defeat in the space of eight days on Thursday night as their arch nemesis Liverpool came away with a 4-2 victory at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian made 10 changes for the second game running following a 2-1 home reversal against Champions League chasing Leicester.

And United icon Keane believes the last two results highlights how far they are behind their city neighbours Man City.

He told Sky Sports: “Ole looks shell shocked, it’s been a tough few days, it’s been a tough few days, the performance tonight, nowhere near good enough,” he said on Sky Sports’ post-match coverage.

“On the back of that Leicester result, where you start playing your squad players who you think are good enough to get Manchester United back to winning league titles…absolutely no way.

“I think all of United’s shortcomings have been shown up in the last couple of days.

“Okay, they have got the Europa League final in a few weeks. But they are only there because they came up short in the Champions League.”

He continued: “The last few days, I can’t believe how short United are. We’ve praised United the last few months, but this squad is so short of competing with Man City for the title.

“I think Man City are so far ahead of this Man City squad, it’s scary.

“I think Ole will reflect on the last few days and think, ‘We need three or four big players to come in this summer, at least’.

“That’s easier said than done, the recruitment has got to be right and you’ve got be given money to spend.”

On Fred and McTominay, Keane added: “I just look at the performance of the two midfielders tonight, McTominay, he’s a good honest player.

“They’ve got Fred – as long as them two are playing in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning big trophies.

“I know Ole preserves with Fred but I can’t see it. How they think Fred is going to get United back to winning titles I don’t know.

“I know he [Solskjaer] dragged him off but even so it was sloppy, it was lazy. It is schoolboy stuff.

“[Harry] Maguire is a loss but these are school boy errors. Fred is under no pressure there and gives it away.

“Shaw is an experienced international player. We are building the goalkeeper [Dean Henderson] up to say is he going be the future No.1 for United and they come up short.

“Maguire is a loss but they are school boy errors, it has nothing to do with losing Maguire.”

Keane brutally added: “I think the fact they took Fred off was a bigger help.”

United have already sealed a top-four spot but have now lost three of their last four games in all competitions, conceding 10 goals in the process.
