Mauricio Pochettino could be sacked as Paris Saint-Germain manager this summer – ‘Losing Ligue 1 title to Lille is like Man City losing the Premier League to Sunderland!’

It’s very possible Paris Saint-Germain could sack Mauricio Pochettino in the summer just six months after hiring him, talkSPORT has been told.

Tony Cascarino, who spent six years playing in France, says the former Tottenham boss will be in danger of the guillotine if PSG surrender the Ligue 1 title to Lille – saying it would ‘be like Man City losing the Premier League title to Sunderland’.

Pochettino is looking to guide PSG to a first ever Champions League trophy

Pochettino was only appointed PSG boss in January, and quickly lifted the first piece of silverware of his coaching career after guiding the Parisien giants to the Trophee des Champions – the French Super Cup.

But things have not gone to plan since. PSG, after losing last season’s final, are out of the Champions League after being outclassed over two legs by Manchester City in the semi-finals, and are also currently trailing in the Ligue 1 title race.

It’s going down to the wire in the French top flight, with Lille currently sitting three points clear of PSG with two games remaining, although the defending champions do have a game in hand.

It would be a huge shock for Lille to lift the trophy, says Cascarino, who explains the team aren’t even the top club in their area of the North East of France – comparing them to Sunderland.

Pochettino’s side still have a shot at lifting the French Cup, with a semi-final against Montpellier coming up this month.

But losing out on the title – which PSG have dominated for the best part of a decade – in his first season, plus his Champions League failure, could see the French giants do the unthinkable and pull the trigger just months into Pochettino’s reign.

“If they don’t win the league and they’ve been knocked out of the Champions League in the manner they have, 4-1 over two legs, PSG are very capable of sacking Pochettino,” said Weekend Sports Breakfast host Cascarino.

“They do what Roman Abramovich and Chelsea do. You think they’re not going to do it, it seems like a ridiculous decision, but then they go and do it.

“There have been other managers at PSG who have won things and been sacked, so don’t be surprised if poch gets the sack at PSG… especially if Lille win the league.

“Lille winning Ligue 1 is worse than Leicester winning the Premier League, it’s a team way lower. Lille is the second biggest team in its area, RC Lens are a far bigger club in the North East of France.

“It’s like Sunderland winning the league over Man City. Sorry Sunderland fans if I’ve upset you, but that’s the best comparison.

“It would be a huge shock to the French first division if Lille win the title. Other clubs have done it, of course, Montpellier did it a few years ago, but the budget is not comparable to PSG’s.

Jason Cundy's scathing assessment of PSG as a club and brands star man Neymar a selfish, overrated, petulant YouTube player!

“Pochettino has only been there since January but PSG have lost seven games in that time.

“OK, two were against Manchester City and one was against Bayern Munich, but he could easily lose his job. PSG were quite comfortably second best in both legs against City.

“He was brought in to do what Thomas Tuchel was brought in to do – keep winning the league and get them closer to winning the Champions League. Pochettino could do neither!”
