Out of absolutely nowhere it was announced that Nuno Espirito Santo is leaving Wolves.
Nuno will bring his four-year spell in charge to an end after Wolves’ Premier League clash at home to Manchester United on Sunday.
He had been linked with moves elsewhere but this news really has taken everyone by surprise.
“It’s spun me today,” journalist and Wolves fan Jacqui Oatley told talkSPORT. “I was only in his press conference earlier today.
“I thought it was a little odd the press conference had been brought forward half an hour which doesn’t sound like a big deal but it’s religiously 1 o’clock on Friday.
“I wasn’t expecting this but there was something he said in his press conference which I thought was a bit odd.
“He was asked about his plans next week and next season and he said ‘focusing on tomorrow, I’m looking forward to tomorrow’.
“He said recently when asked a similar question that he was only thinking about the game… but now we know why. It’s not just his policy, he had something on his mind.
But why has he left? Well, that’s also a mystery to Oatley and just about everyone else who has an interest in the team.
“Nobody knows,” Oatley added. “Nobody who follows Wolves very closely, apart from Nuno and those in the club actually knows why this has happened specifically.
“We know that Nuno hasn’t enjoyed this season at all, he’s spoken so many times about the effects of the pandemic. He absolutely despises football without fans.
“He hadn’t seen his family for months. He had his son at university in Manchester but his wife and daughter were in Portugal and he seems to have been pertinently been affected by his inability to travel and see people close to him.
“On the pitch loads of things have gone wrong. Raul Jimenez’s injury on November 29 and they didn’t have any senior back-up for him.”
Wolves will now begin identifying a new replacement for the Portuguese but what’s next for him?
Ex-Tottenham star Darren Bent reckons Nuno represents a good option for his former club.
“He’s managed to get Wolves seventh,” Bent told talkSPORT. “If he got that Spurs team, with those players, I think he’d easily finish higher than seventh.
“I think Nuno would be a good appointment.”
And according to the Betfair, all roads lead to Tottenham with Nuno now the 8/15 favourite to become Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor. Below you can see who the leading contenders to become next Spurs boss are.
