Pep Guardiola has labelled the 2020/21 Premier League title success as the toughest of his career and dedicated it to Manchester City legend Colin Bell, who passed away earlier this year.
City were crowned champions with three matches to spare on Tuesday night thanks to Leicester’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
But it only confirmed what has been inevitable and obvious for months now, with Guardiola’s men head and shoulders above the rest of the league from about November onward.
However, the City boss, who now has three Premier League titles to go with his separate trio of La Liga and Bundesliga triumphs, insists this was the ‘hardest one’.
He said: “This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other. This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.
“They are so special. To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced – and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless.
“Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient.”
Guardiola also dedicated the title to the fans who weren’t there to see it, as well as City icon Bell, one of the club’s greatest ever players who died aged 74 in January.
He added: “I promise them (the fans) we sense their love, we appreciate it and we could not have done what we have done without it.
“I hope we can all celebrate together one day not too far away. It has been such a hard year for so many people.
“This one is really for our fans and for Colin Bell and all his family.”
Meanwhile, City’s players might not be able to party together in person, but they’ve been having plenty of fun on social media.
