A petrol bomb was alleged to have been aimed at cars sat on the driveway before the fire spread to the house, causing significant damage.

Police and up to eight fire engines attended the scene and Lawwell and his family were taken to a safe location, with no injuries reported.

There have been reports that Lawwell’s daughter and baby granddaughter were inside accommodation above the garage when the blaze broke out.

An investigation is under way, with a Police Scotland spokesperson saying: “Around 1am on Wednesday, 19th May officers were called to a report of vehicles on fire outside a house on Peel Road, Thorntonhall.

“No one was injured and officers are currently working with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.”

Celtic said Lawwell, 61, and his family were ‘extremely shaken and shocked’ by the incident.

“We can confirm that significant damage has been caused to Peter Lawwell’s house and vehicles there, following an explosion and fire early this morning, forcing the family to leave the property,” a Celtic statement read.

“Clearly, Peter’s family are extremely shaken and shocked by these terrible events, but thankfully all are safe.

“We understand that Police Scotland are currently undertaking a criminal investigation.

“Peter and his family will of course receive the full support and care of everyone at the club.”

Lawwell is leaving Celtic at the end of June after 17 years as CEO.

During his time at the club, Celtic have won 29 trophies, including 13 league titles.

Four domestic trebles have been achieved in that period, while the Hoops have also reached the last 16 of the Champions League three times.

But this season has been a huge disappointment, with the club failing to win any silverware and demolished by Rangers in the Scottish Premiership to miss out on ten titles in a row.
