Incredibly, despite all their setbacks this season, Arsenal have a decent shot at securing European football for next term.
Their defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League semi-finals appeared to consign the Gunners to no European football for the first time in 26 years.
However, three straight league wins and results from teams around them going in their favour mean that playing on the continent isn’t out of the question.
Champions League and Europa League qualification is out of reach but Mikel Arteta’s side can still finish seventh if they beat Brighton and if Tottenham and Everton drop points against Leicester and Manchester City respectively.
But Ray Parlour, who’s undoubtedly Arsenal through and through, may be hoping his former side don’t get the better of the Seagulls as a seventh-placed finish would see them qualify for the inaugural Europa Conference League.
The new competition is a fantastic way to give teams that wouldn’t typically play abroad a chance to achieve their dreams – but Parlour believes it would benefit Arsenal more to not be in Europe next season.
“You don’t want to be seventh, you don’t want to be playing in that,” Parlour told talkSPORT Breakfast. “I don’t want Arsenal to be playing in that.
“It might do them a favour not to be in Europe for one season. They can take stock in pre-season and say ‘look, we need to really have a go next year’.
“It just doesn’t sound right – conference! You don’t want to be in that tournament.”
