Ryan Mason insists ‘VAR was wrong’ and Harry Kane’s goal was ONSIDE as Tottenham’s Champions League hopes are all-but ended by Leeds

Ryan Mason insisted the VAR decision to rule out Harry Kane’s first-half goal against Leeds for offside was ‘WRONG’ after Tottenham’s Champions League hopes were all-but ended following a 3-1 defeat at Leeds.

Son Heung-min cancelled out Stuart Dallas’ early opener, but Patrick Bamford fired the Whites back in front at Elland Road before half-time and substitute Rodrigo’s emphatic finish sealed a deserved victory.

Leeds climbed back into the top half of the table, while Spurs now face a fight to qualify for even a Europa League place after their first league defeat under interim boss Mason.

The north London club sit sixth in the Premier League, five points off fourth spot with three games remaining, but both teams immediately above them – West Ham and Chelsea – have games in hand.

And interim boss Mason was stunned by the VAR call to overturn Kane’s superb chipped goal, making it clear he believes the decision changed the course of the game.

The 29-year-old told talkSPORT: “Disappointing result, obviously, because we have come here to win the game.

“I thought they started bright and took the lead, deservedly so. We got back in the game with a good goal ourselves but at 1-1 there was a major call that was wrongly given offside.

“I thought Harry [Kane] was onside, I’ve watched it many times now.

“It’s amazing what momentum can do in games and if that goes in, it’s a totally different game.

“Second half we created some chances but we weren’t clinical enough in the big moments.”

Mason added: “In my opinion if it’s an inch offside or ten centimetres then it’s offside, but when I watch the footage I saw a yellow line and a line where Harry’s foot is. The line actually goes back from the yellow line and that would indicate that he’s onside.

“I’m disappointed because I’ve seen it many times and really, really believe it’s onside.”

Darren Ambrose agreed with Mason and said the frequent offside decisions from VAR are ‘killing the game.’

“It’s like a broken record – everyone’s absolutely sick of it, sick of the VAR laws of the game,” added the talkSPORT pundit and former Premier League ace.

“That – for me – was level, if not onside. If it’s level it’s onside.

“You want to see excitement in football and goals, this is killing it and taking all the excitement out of the game.”
