Burnley boss Sean Dyche is ready to make the step up to a bigger job in the Premier League and should be in the running as Tottenham’s next manager, talkSPORT has been told.
While Scott Parker has been widely linked with the Spurs job, his second relegation in three seasons in charge of Fulham proves he is not ready to make the leap, according to Ally McCoist.
Instead, the Rangers legend insists Dyche should be talked about for one of the top jobs in the English top-flight, with both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher also hailing the Clarets chief after another impressive win.
Burnley secured their Premier League status for another season with a 2-0 victory at Fulham on Monday night – consigning Parker’s men to the Championship in the process.
First-half goals from Ashley Westwood and Chris Wood secured victory for the visitors on what was Sean Dyche’s 350th game in charge of the Clarets.
Sky Sports pundits Carragher and Neville both heaped praise on the longest-serving current boss in the English top flight on Monday Night Football – insisting he should be in the running for the Manager of the Year gong.
And while some are now tipping Parker for the vacant Tottenham job, McCoist is baffled Dyche isn’t also in the conversation thanks to his ‘exceptional’ work at Turf Moor.
“People are talking about Scott Parker and I like him, I really do like him, but the fact of the matter is he’s managed a team that has been relegated and that’s one of the reasons why I’m not sure he’s ready for Spurs,” said former Scotland striker McCoist on Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“But we should be talking about Sean Dyche for bigger clubs.
“I love Burnley, I absolutely love them. I love watching them play, 4-4-2, two boys at the back Mee and Tarkowski, they’ve got a great goalie in Pope, the boys in the middle of the park are solid, McNeil has got a bit of quality about him and the two boys up front, they’re like a throw-back, for me.
“They work their socks off as a team, they know their strengths and they play to their strengths, that’s what Burnley do.
“I just think the job Sean Dyche has done at Burnley is absolutely fantastic.
“I don’t know if leaving Burnley for the Crystal Palace job is a step up. Clearly Palace are not Spurs or Arsenal, they’re not the next level, although they are a London side.
“But we keep saying, ‘has Sean Dyche done all he can do at Burnley? That’s the question and he is the only man who can answer that question.
“But nobody can deny the quality of the job he’s done there over the years. He’s been exceptional.”
Speaking on Monday night football, Carragher said: “We’ve just been speaking about believing in managers at the top end of the table in terms of a belief your manager can get you into a Champions League final, a semi-final or compete for honours.
“But that belief would be at the bottom of the table as well. It doesn’t matter where Burnley are, but think of what they spend.
“You talk about manager of the year, but Sean Dyche should be in the running for that year after year because of what they spend.
“You look at what Fulham and what they spend in the transfer market and other teams that go up – they all spend a lot more money than Burnley.
“But Burnley are always there [surviving]. It’s a completely different style of football and that might be something that puts people at the top of the table off Sean Dyche.
“There’s actually been reports that Scott Parker he might actually go onto something else in the Premier League.
“But a lot of that will not so much be the results but the style of football he plays and the way there could be transferred to a team further up the table.
“I think that’s always an interesting debate with Sean Dyche and other managers, but year after year he’s as good as anyone.”
Burnley will compete in the Premier League for the sixth year running next season and Neville believes it’s critical that Burnley keep hold of Dyche – or face dropping into the Championship.
Neville stated: “He’s the most important man at the football club. If they lost Sean Dyche then…”
That prompted Carragher to say: “We think if they lost Sean Dyche they’d go down…”
Neville responded in agreement: “I think they would, honestly.”
He added: “Ultimately he’s embedded so much into that club, so culturally a new man trying to come in to shift that philosophy and values would be a nightmare.
“The players are, the recruitment is set, everything that is run throughout the club is absolutely fixed.
“So coming out of Sean Dyche, almost weaning off him is a problem for Burnley. They have to try and keep him.
“If you have aspirations, and I’ve been here by the way as an owner [Salford City], to sort of think I want to change the style – you can sometimes get a shock and a slap round the face.
“Burnley are not daft enough to do that, he is the most important person at that football club.”
