Tottenham booed by returning fans as Aston Villa defeat opens Europa League door for Everton and West Ham on Harry Kane’s potential farewell

The race for Europa League football has just blown wide open as Tottenham lost 2-1 to Aston Villa and Everton beat Wolves 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Spurs were booed off by their returning supporters as a bizarre own goal from Sergio Reguilon and an Ollie Watkins strike completed a turnaround for Villa after Steven Bergwijn had put the hosts in front.

Amid rumours of a Harry Kane exit this summer, it capped off a miserable week for Spurs, who are now facing an uphill battle to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Richarlison’s winner against Wolves saw Everton move level on points with Spurs, albeit with an inferior goal difference.

But West Ham are now level on points with sixth-place Tottenham with a game in hand tonight against West Brom.

Anything but a defeat would put the Hammers in control of sixth place ahead of the final day.

West Ham will host Southampton, while Tottenham and Everton travel to Leicester and Manchester City respectively.

While fans returning to stadiums has sparked jubilant scenes up and down the country, Spurs fans were not in a party mood.

The Villa match follows numerous protests against owners ENIC and Daniel Levy, with more calls for their owners to go both during and after the match.

They were cheered up by an early strike from Bergwijn, but a comical own goal from Reguilon lowered the mood.

Watkins completed the turnaround before the break, and both half-time and full-time whistles were greeted with noisy jeers.

If Kane does leave this summer, he will no doubt join a club who offered him more service than he got today, and someone competing in Europe’s elite competitions.

At this rate, Spurs may not even make the nearly-formed Europa Conference League.
